Theoria - erfgoed

The ‘Casino’ Kortrijk was founded in 1844 as a concert hall and casino. It later became a primary school and offices moved into the strategically located building. With the help of a subordinated loan by PMV, the protected heritage site was bought by a local entrepreneurial duo that turned it into a multifunctional cultural hub, with a quirky bookshop.

The Casino Kortrijk was founded in 1844 as a concert hall with a limited casino function. In popular speech, it was soon given the name Casino. However, it only retained this function for a short time and was soon converted into a primary school. After World War II, the building was only used as office space for, among others, a health insurance fund, the association of the textile industry and – as its last tenant – the Flemish Network of Enterprises VOKA.

Subordinated loan from PMV

The property is strategically located near the urban conservatory, between the commercial heart of Kortrijk and the station area. On 12 September 2016, the protected heritage site was purchased by a local entrepreneurial duo from Kortrijk: Pascal Vandenhende and Annemie Bernaerts, business owners of the quirky bookshop Theoria and Komma in de Lucht. PMV granted a subordinated loan as part of the redevelopment of the building as a multifunctional cultural hub including a bookshop, a coworking space, a book kitchen and an event space. On 11 January 2017, the entrepreneurs successfully opened the doors.
