It is very encouraging to see that groundbreaking research gets the opportunity to grow in an entrepreneurial context. The fact the we can bring a piece of nanotechnology closer to the market is a big honor for us.

Kim De Nolf, CEO at QustomDot

QustomDot is a spin-off from UGent and a pioneer in the development of environmentally friendly quantum dots, which are innovative materials that improve the colour gamut and energy efficiency of display screens. The company tailors the technology for next generation LED displays, going from high resolution LED TV’s to augmented reality goggles.

The technology from QustomDot has important benefits compared to the current generation of quantum dots and is able to improve a wide range of display screens. The choice was made to develop a future-proof, ecological quantum dot technology that does not use cadmium, a very heavy, toxic element rejected by many environmental agencies. As a result, we have a technology that complies with European regulations.

Thanks to their colour purity, quantum dots are particularly suited to produce high-quality displays. They generate richer, more vibrant colours than traditional display technology.

Quantum dots also reduce the ecological footprint of a product because they are easy to process and increase energy efficiency – undeniable benefits for a new technology. Furthermore, quantum dots are very easy to print. This reduces production costs and enables new applications such as flexible displays. QustomDot’s technology is suitable for improving a wide range of displays. In cooperation with large players from the display industry, the spin-off will focus on the latest trends, such as microLEDs for smart watches or phones.

Partners in ambition at QustomDot

QustomDot’s potential was acknowledged by several investment funds from day one. Qbic II took the leading investor role. Together with PMV and VIGO Ventures, an investment of 3 million euros was realised. This amount offers QustomDot the necessary financial space to further develop the technology.

For PMV, the connection with the latest LED applications based on environmentally friendly technology was the decisive factor. “At PMV we try to focus on innovation that no only has strong commercial potential but that is also groundbreaking in ecological terms. We are convinced that QustomDot combines these two ambitions in a good way,” said Roald Borré, Head of Equity Investments at PMV.
