Virya Energy (the energy holding company of Colruyt Group and Korys) and PMV signed an agreement to acquire PMV’s shares in Parkwind in spring 2020. Through the transaction, Virya Energy acquired 100% of Parkwind’s shares.

Flanders has a leading role in the field of offshore wind energy and can export this knowledge in the future. That is why PMV, Colruyt Group and Korys combined their interests in Belgian offshore wind farms in a partnership in the form of Parkwind nv. The partnership combines the available expertise in offshore wind energy and develops synergy benefits for the tendering, financing, construction, operation and maintenance of offshore production facilities. Parkwind operates offshore wind farms off the Belgian coast and has also started expansion outside Belgium.

Offshore wind energy

Colruyt Group, Korys and PMV have been investing in offshore wind energy since 2009, first through Belwind and since 2012 through the participation in Parkwind. Thanks to this partnership, Parkwind has grown into a successful offshore wind farm developer, operating both in Belgium and abroad. With more than 10 years of experience in developing, financing and managing offshore wind farms, Parkwind has acquired a unique position in the sector. The installed capacity is already 552 MW and Parkwind aims to further increase the share of green energy in cooperation with local communities, governments and suppliers. Parkwind is currently developing an additional 219 MW of capacity in the North Sea and is increasing its international presence with the Arcadis Ost 1 project in Germany (257 MW) and the Oriel Windfarm project in Ireland (330 MW). By applying new technologies, innovative design solutions and installation techniques, Parkwind is ensuring the transition to renewable energy while respecting both the environment and all stakeholders.

Cooperation

Initially, PMV together with Colruyt and Korys played an active role in acquiring the Belwind wind farm from the failing E-concern. PMV thereby helped safeguard the existing development, enabling the project to make a successful restart. Since the establishment of Parkwind, PMV has been an active shareholder and partner supporting Parkwind in its further growth and internationalisation. Even after the sale of the PMV shares, Parkwind and PMV will continue to cooperate for the development of new offshore wind farms in the European Union. Under the agreement, PMV acquired a minority stake in Arcadis Ost 1, a German wind farm being developed by Parkwind in the Baltic Sea.

Virya Energy

Virya Energy was founded in late 2019 by Colruyt Group and Korys with the aim of bringing together their holdings in renewable energy. Virya Energy currently holds stakes in Parkwind, a Belgian company active in offshore wind energy, and in Eurowatt, a company mainly active in onshore wind energy in France, but also active in the Polish, Spanish and Portuguese renewable energy sectors. Virya Energy focuses on the development, financing, construction and operation of renewable energy sources and aspires to international expansion. By bringing together its shareholdings, Virya Energy aims to promote technological and knowledge exchange between its teams and create economies of scale to remain a key player in the rapidly changing renewable energy sector.
