PMV-ARKimedes invests indirectly in promising and scalable Flemish start-ups and SMEs.
ARKimedes is structured as a fund of funds that invest in ARKIVs. An ARKIV is an investment fund accredited by ARKimedes after a selection procedure. Jointly with an accreditation, ARKimedes is allowed to invest in this ARKIV. In addition to the financial contribution of ARKimedes in an ARKIV, every euro of ARKimedes should be matched by at least one euro originating from private investors. In this way ARKimedes can create a financial leverage for the available risk capital in Flanders. Moreover, ARKIVs are managed by hands-on private managers who decide to invest or divest in start-ups and SMEs.
PMV-ARKimedes is managing two ARKimedes funds
In 2005, the first fund raised 110 million Euros via a public offering of shares and bonds with a 12-year term. The investment period ended in 2011 and the funds were invested in twelve accredited ARKIVs.
The second fund was established in 2010 and - in contrast to the first fund - was funded by the Flemish Region through PMV. The second fund's committed capital was increased in 2015 with 50 million Euros to 160 million Euros. In 2016 an additional 50 million Euros led to a grand total of 210 million Euros to ensure the availability of risk capital to fill the traditional equity gap of start-ups as well as the second equity gap of scale-ups. Moreover, the second fund was converted from a closed-end fund into an evergreen fund. In this way the second fund is able to reinvest exit proceeds into new ARKIV fund initiatives.
To conclude, ARKimedes is here to provide continuous funding and support for entrepreneurship and creativity in Flanders.
