Microled van Micledi

At Micledi, we make displays that are 100 times brighter than commercially available alternatives. In doing so, we provide crucial technology for AR devices that present digital information to consumers in a new way.

Soeren Steudel, co-founder and CTO of Micledi

Micledi Microdisplays, an imec spin-off, is developing microLED displays for Augmented Reality glasses. A market with a future because Augmented Reality or AR, in which a virtual information layer is laid over reality, is booming. It is even expected that AR headsets could eventually replace smartphones.

Micledi wants to enable AR for everyday personal use through smart glasses that are convenient to use: small, lightweight, with a long-life battery and at a reasonable price. To make this possible, Micledi is developing the world’s smallest and brightest displays. The key innovation behind MICLEDI is a new integration technology for microLEDs on 300mm silicon disks, a technology developed in collaboration with imec.

Micledi Microdisplays was founded by Dr Soeren Steudel and Dr Alexander Mityashin, both researchers at imec with deep know-how in R&D of organic displays. Sean Lord, an experienced executive in the semiconductor industry, is CEO of the new company.

Partners in ambition at Micledi

PMV joined imec.xpand and Fidimec in 2019 in a capital round totalling 4.5 million euros. In 2021, FPIM and KBC Focus Fund strengthened the investment team ending at a total investment of 11.5 million euros. Micledi’s new generation of displays for AR glasses fits into PMV’s strategy to support early-stage technology with great international potential to strengthen Flanders’ position as a top region.
