Erfgoed - Theresianenklooster

In the heart of Bruges there is a historic site that is getting a special repurposing after years of vacancy. The former Theresian Monastery, also known as the Weyler Barracks, is being revived as a new residential area. The imposing architecture has been transformed into residential areas, with respect for historical elements. For this unprecedented project, developer VDD Project Development appealed for funding from PMV.

The former Theresian Monastery is protected as a monument because of its architectural-historical value. A characteristic feature is the original austere typology of the convent building with inner gardens, vaulted corridors, chapter house and cellars. The convent was built at the end of the 17th century by order of the Theresian Sisters. In the early 19th century, the convent was put to use as a military hospital and barracks with the church being split off from the whole. During this period, the convent’s gabled roof was replaced by a third storey.

Contemporary repurposing

After World War I, the monastery was given its current name ‘Weyler Barracks’ after the major who died in 1917 in Zarren. From the 1960s, the monastery was in public ownership and housed various government departments. In the 1990s, the building came into private hands and remained empty. Various redevelopment options were sought, but to no avail. The barracks were then sold to VDD Project Development, an added-value developer specialising in the contemporary redevelopment of historical patrimony. The adjacent properties in Ezelstraat were also acquired, allowing the inner area to be redeveloped. With respect for the heritage values and special attention for the significance of the site in its surroundings, the site will be developed into a mixed-use project with high-quality housing for a varied target audience and some shops.

PMV provides credit for repurposing

PMV, as part of its Flemish Heritage Vault activities, has provided a credit to VDD Project Development which will redevelop the monastery. The credit will allow the developer to complete the financing picture for both the purchase of the land and buildings and the subsequent construction works.
