Handelsbeurs shines again thanks to PMV funding

Erfgoed - Handelsbeurs

In 1997, the Handelsbeurs lost its function: the Antwerp Stock Exchange was taken over by the Brussels Stock Exchange that year. The magnificent building has been empty ever since and is today being respectfully given a new, commercial use. As a result, the building can once again play an economic, social and cultural role in the city.

PMV is particularly proud of the role it was able to play in that story. It was precisely because of the combination of social and economic goals that PMV managed to enthuse partners to commit to the project, as the city lacked the necessary financial resources.

PMV as shareholder and lender

The new use for the Handelsbeurs, the result of a construction process that started in 2015, is the result of a strong business plan in which the 16th-century building becomes a semi-public event space that also includes a restaurant and hotel from the international Marriott chain. PMV helped make that plan possible by providing financing as a shareholder and lender. Moreover, with a profitable business plan – possibly thanks to the funding of a thorough study phase – it managed to gather other actors around the ambitious project.

Underground parking in historic basements?

That managed to reconcile the historical value of the property with the requirements of a modern new building – how to combine a new underground car park with historical cellars? Although combining a public space with running a hotel will be a balancing act, the combination definitely creates a new dynamic in the district. PMV is proud that its financing and guidance have led to an optimal redevelopment while preserving the important site in the historical heart of the city. After all, the best way to safeguard the past is to give it an active and sustainable role in the present.

PMV’s role: providing venture capital

PMV is co-shareholder of the company Handelsbeurs Antwerpen nv, together with The Sax bvba, Diepensteyn nv (the holding company above the Palm group from Londerzeel-Steenhuffel), Denys Global nv and the urban development company AG Vespa. The Flemish Heritage Fund is also providing venture capital for the project.

Other partners

Handelsbeurs Antwerpen nv works closely with the operators of its various components, in this case Q-park, J&M Catering, Borealis Hotel Group and Marriott Hotel Brands, as well as with the city of Antwerp and the Flemish Heritage Agency.
